Larry Hechler's Presentation

I really enjoyed looking at all of the parts of a laptop. I had no idea that you needed to clean your keyboard. I will do that soon. I also will turn off my laptop every night when I go to sleep to save my battery.

Topic for Presentation

For my presentation I have chosen the topic of advertising to children, specifically food advertisements. I have chosen this because I plan on majoring in Business with an emphasis in Marketing.

PowerPoint Article Reactions

After reading the articles about PowerPoint, I learned a lot about what I should not do in my presentation. All of the information about colors is really interesting; it's so true about how they affect one's moods. Taking words off of the slide will be hard to do and is something that a lot of people have trouble doing. Seeing a presentation with less words and more graphics and only essential information would be really nice.

1. Don't read from the slides.
2. Keep animation to a minimum.
3. Use the same font and make it big!
4. The less words, the better.
5. Don't be monotone.

Chris Nolan's Presentation

I enjoyed Chris Nolan's presentation today in class. He introduced me to many things in Google that I did not know existed. I will definitely be using the Advanced Search and Google Scholar. Those will help me find scholarly articles to begin searches for papers and projects.

Photo Laws

After reading the article about the lady who got her picture of her son placed in a magazine, I'm shocked. I had no idea that a company could take a picture of the Internet and put it in their magazine without contacting who they took it from. This definitely evades her privacy and I completely agree with her fight for some kind of compensation. In the US, I don't think this would be any different. The publisher would still need to contact her and compensate her for use of her photo. Just because it is online does not mean that it is public use, that lady owns the rights to the image.

PowerPoint Presentations

I think that an effective PowerPoint presentation is interesting but doesn't have too many special effects. They can take away from the actual message and get to be quite annoying. I don't like when there is a lot of info on a slide because I can never see it all if the presenter goes too fast. I hate when people read straight from the PowerPoint too. That is so boring and makes me want to go back to my room and go to sleep. I have had instructors that do that here at Trinity. Other things that bother me are when people put really bright fonts on PowerPoint with picture backgrounds and try to make it all creative looking. PowerPoints serve a purpose of informing the audience about some topic, it's the speaker's job to make it interesting for them, not a slides.

Microsoft Word

I've used word for every paper I've written since I was in junior high so my experience is high. Although, sometimes I can't figure out everything perfectly. I'd like to review techniques like bullets and double-spacing. I always have trouble with header and footers, especially setting the page number. A basic overview of Word will allow me to master these simple tasks.

Computer Experience

Hello Class & Dr. Semmes -

My computer experience is not very distinguished. I took one Computer Science class my junior year of high school and that's about it. I use a computer every day, however, so I can navigate through the Internet pretty well. I have a Dell laptop that my dad purchased from the school. I'm excited about the class because I'm already learning a lot more about what I can do with the computer. I'd love for everything I do to be the easiest, shortest way possible which I think I'll learn in class. The situation with my computer is fine; I understand it and it works for me when I need it to. After today's class, I can now connect to all the drives from my laptop.

Have a great day and I'll see you on Thursday!

Hello & Good Afternoon!

Well, here goes. My first blog to ever do and to be honest, I don't really know what to put. So I guess I'll just start with a little about me and what I've been up to here at Trinity for the past semester.

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas and can't imagine living anywhere else. I lived in a suburb of North-West Houston for all of my life and have only moved once about 2 miles away from my old house. I'm a first year here and excited about the spring semester. I am a part of the swim team and water polo team here on campus. I love being in the water; it's where I feel most comfortable. College life has been hectic and a little hard to adjust to but because of the swim team, it's been just a little easier. Swimming has always been a huge part of my life and I couldn't imagine my life without it.

I plan on majoring in business with an emphasis in marketing, but I'm still not quite sure about that yet. I still don't know what I want to be when I graduate. I'd love to study abroad at least once and break out of my comfort zone. I want to go to either Australia or Greece; they are both beautiful countries.

My family means the world to me. I have a huge extended family that I can't see enough of. My sister is my best friend and I don't know what I'd do without her. Living three hours away from her is one of the hardest things I've ever done. We are fourteen months apart so everyone thinks we're twins which gets a little annoying. My mom is the greatest person in this entire world. She's amazing and so caring about every aspect of life. I can tell her everything and hope to be half the woman she has become. My dad is just like an other dad. He nags about grades and swimming but I know he means well. He cares so much about me and I love him for being so interested in my life. I wish I could be closer to him, but I think that's going to come with me getting older.

I have a dog and a cat that I miss very much. My dog, Duke, is a six year old German Shepherd who has the same birthday as me. I love that! He is very relaxed and hardly ever barks. He loves everyone he meets and will lick you to death before he'd bite you. I miss just being able to pet him while I watch television with my family. My cat's name is CiCi but we call her Kitty. She is a Siamese cat with blue crossed eyes. She's fat and unfortunately, since she was a stray, we don't know how old she is. I love her and the fact that she non-stops meows. It's like she wants to talk to everyone. With her age though, she doesn't take kindly to others. She'll hiss and bat at them with her paws.

Well, I think you know a lot about me and where I come from. I look forward to future blogs and learning about everyone else in the class.
Until next time, take care!
